For several decades dentists used silver amalgam material almost exclusively for dental fillings. The material was quite strong, but it was far from attractive. Even worse, as the material aged it would turn to almost black color. And, although conclusive evidence is hard to find, many have been concerned about the mercury found in silver amalgam and the associated possible health risks.
Fortunately, modern-day dentists have another alternative to offer patients: composite fillings. The most obvious advantage of today’s composite material is that it’s tooth-colored, making fillings nearly invisible, and the color won’t change over time. In addition to that, composite fillings are very durable. Eventually, composite fillings may need to be replaced, but generally speaking they should last for many years.
